There are novels that you read when you're young and shallow, and don't get them at all. You have to revisit them later in life to appreciate them.
And there are novels that you think are wonderful when you're young and shallow, that you revisit for nostalgia later in life. When you revisit them, you realise that you liked them precisely because you were young and shallow.
