What an interesting fairy tale! I have wanted to read George MacDonald for awhile now. This book came in first for me at the library. The version I read was illustrated by Ruth Sanderson and I really loved her artwork for the story. I think I will need to revisit this story to glean some meaning from it. Reading the afterword helped, but I just see it as a fairy tale, not a work laced with religious meaning.
The character names were strange: Tangle and Mossy? Is this usual for Victorian authors? It’s crazy to me that this work was originally published during the American Civil War. How different it would have been to live in England versus America at the time…
