The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie
by Muriel Spark
Jean Brodie, a 30 year old teacher in Edinburgh, introduces some of her students (the "crème de la crème") to the facts of life, or rather the facts in HER life. Six girls (the Brodie-set) keep on following her even in the next grade. To the old maid it feels like her prime, but in reality she has an unhealthy hold on the group. Gradually one of the girls becomes conscious of this, and this is the start of Brodie's decline. Pretty exciting and ingeniously composed story, but in the end it winds down a bit. Nevertheless a nice story! (2.5 stars)
