We Have Always Lived in the Castle by Shirley Jackson

5.0

A superb example of having different narrative voices for each character. While the setting and situation were eerie, those looking for horror or goth will likely be disappointed. This is a much better fit for those looking for an exploration of how societal outcasts develop and think. Merricat’s fantastical imagination is an adventure into the mind of an adolescent frozen in time by her exclusion from society. I’m glad I didn’t read the introduction or reviews before reading, but reading after about the similarities to Jackson’s real life added to my appreciation of the story.
