The Time of My Life by Cecelia Ahern
3.0
I love Cecelia Ahern. I like how she comes up with these fun concepts and then brings them to live with realistic characters. None of her books are stale and feel like a repeat of a previous story. That being said, my initial impression of this book wasn't as glowing as I would've wanted it to be. It took me a while to warm up to the main character and actually care about her situation. I loved the concept, and the execution was fine. Ultimately, I was entertained and got something out of this story. It was funny, and Life ("Cosmo") was just great.
I liked that while the main character got a little confused emotionally as Life became more attractive, it went no where. I also got a little crush on him, so I get it. I loved how the book didn't wrap up all of the main character's problems in a neat bow or solve them for her. She had to solve them herself, with the help of her life. I also loved that her best friend (in my eyes) was her brother, Riley. He was a great character.
The main character wasn't extremely likable, and I initially did not sympathize with her because she just seemed like she was complaining and her problems weren't that important to me, but as the story continued, the character blossomed in her own way as you realize why she is the way she is. I actually prefer it that way. She's not an easy character to swallow, and I'm glad Cecelia made her that way instead of making her a one-size-fits-all "vanilla" character. She was more human for it.
The only real issue I had was at the ending how she was a little heavy handed with a "message". I noticed this in The Gift as well. I hope this isn't going to be a pattern. I don't think those little bits to button up the story are necessary and actually take away from it. Just a small quibble though.
