A Sorceress Comes to Call
by T. Kingfisher
medium-paced
Plot or Character Driven:
Character
Strong character development:
Yes
The narrative was very narrowly focused in scope, which did the story well; it wasn't an expansive world-building fantasy but a few characters in a place and focused on what they wanted and what they felt, and just enough context to know their immediate setting. The impact of the story is on the character development in this simple plot, with later fantastical elements for interest and excitement. I only read this because it won the Locus Award for Fantasy this year, and I enjoyed it better than Nettle & Bone (won the Hugo Award a few years before), and am more motivated to consider reading more T. Kingfisher now than I was before.
