Girl, Wash Your Face
by Rachel Hollis
So much about this book I loved.... but there were definitely some opinions I did not agree with...
Rachel Hollis did an amazing job on making this book an easy, fun read with a powerful message. Step up and be you! The real you! Use your past as a strength and rise above to be who you want to be. Awesome! Who doesn't want to be encouraged to be a better you? I loved that she incorporated her faith through out the book as well. Although, even those I didn't necessarily fully agree with, if I am to be completely honest.
I loved her go-getter attitude. And how she explained it's really okay to not be like every other mom, or woman for that matter. Living life how best it works for you and your family where you can still be who you are and complete your dreams.... that is what she encourages. I'm all for being able to be my odd, unique self and to learn not to compare to other women. I even highlighted different statements and tips that were inspiring to me so I can flip through and read those when needed.
Some of her tips on finding churches, I did not agree with. But hey if the loud, big, flashy congregation is what works for her, cool. I'll stick to my smaller, family feel church where I can feel close to God and praise him... not so much worried about making sure it's a diverse scene. I grew up under the impression church was about worshiping God not politics and publicity angles. But that's me.
I also disagree with her point of view on weight loss. She makes a few different statements about how women have no excuse to not lose weight. I get promoting being healthy and living a healthy lifestyle through proper diet/nutrition and exercise. But it is not as simple as that for some people and those people are NOT making excuses. I've witnessed first hand women who do everything correct on paper and still don't lose any weight, come to find out medical issues play into their struggles or genetics. For the longest time I was the opposite. It did not matter what I did or ate, I could not gain weight if my life depended on it. Now knowing I have some medical reasoning why has made it easier to adjust my lifestyle and do what I need to do just as the overweight women have had to do. But shaming with an attitude of her method is the only correct method, honestly made me want to put the book down. I just can't agree with this author on everything.
Looking back now, I feel like this book is split pretty 50/50 for me. Half of what she said and strived to impress upon her readers I was absolutely stoked on, the other half pretty irritated at the ignorance she showed.
But hey, this is just my take on it. I took from this book what I liked and what worked for me and am going to ignore the parts that I didn't jive well with. That's all we can do. I am still very glad I read it and recommended it to quite a few friends. I hope they enjoy it and take from it what works for them, which very well may be something different than works for me.... for example that many kids, kudos ladies! I'll stick to my fur children and one step munchkin.
Happy reading.
