28 Summers by Elin Hilderbrand
4.0

I’m trying to catch up on some reviews of the books I read earlier in the summer. 28 Summers was one of my favorites. I love reading Elin Hilderbrand’s books, especially in the summer and especially because I can virtually visit Nantucket. This one mirrors the movie “Same Time, Next Year.” In 28 Summers, we meet Mallory, who has inherited a beach cottage on Nantucket from her aunt and Jake, a friend of Mallory’s brother, who is visiting the cottage during Labor Day weekend 1993. Jake and Mallory form an unshakable bond that first summer that will last through everything else in their lives. After that first summer, they make a pact to get together on Labor Day weekend at the beach house. No matter what.
.
I followed their journey through 28 years of pop culture references, the news of each year, the changes in Mallory and Jake’s lives. Their bond remains a constant through it all. It was dramatic, sad yet joyous, difficult yet real. Love is complex at times. Mallory and Jake had something together that many people can’t or won’t understand. But life, and love, isn’t black or white. There are many shades of gray in between the clouds and the sunshine.
.
For me, this one felt a bit overly emotional in parts, but other than that, I very much enjoyed this book. EH is pretty much an auto-buy author for me now. I can always count on her books to break me out of a slump!
