I enjoyed this book even though I prefer hard and military Science Fiction. This is definitely Urban Fantasy. The cause of the plague is magical though it spreads through a virus. Some of the characters have magical abilities even before the plague enhances them. The magical good guy characters use magic based on modern Wicca calling themselves witches. Sorcerers, fairies both human sized and tiny and elves are also included amongst the Uncanny. Character development is good though she seems to have caught the George RR Martin virus and kills them off after you have really grown to like them. It almost seems that she wanted the second book to be a reboot.
