Hope and Glory
by Jendella Benson
Hope and Glory is a story where death is not the end… but the very beginning. Funerals often bring distant family closer together and this is no exception for the Akindele’s. When the patriarch of the family dies, Glory Akindele returns home to London, abruptly ending her perfectly Instagramable life in Los Angeles. The more time she spends with her family and in her childhood home, the more she learns that the past is not always how you remember it and family secrets are not always what they appear to be.
In reading this novel, it is evident that Jendella Benson wrote this story with so much love and conviction. The emotions from each character felt lifelike; their faith and insecurities were relatable and the incorporation of social justice elements from incarceration to the Black/British experience were well timed and necessary to expose. Hope and Glory is more than a story of family reuniting, it is a revelation of the remarkable bond that exists within the Akindele’s as the family names of Hope and Glory call forth these character’s destinies.
