The Long Way Home
by Louise Penny
This book has quite a lot of mixed reviews so I'm gonna write a positive one.
I liked it much more than I thought I would after seeing other people's reactions.
The thing about this series, and it's just my opinion, of course, that it's a drama first and a collection of detective stories second. With that in mind I found this installment to be quite interesting and learnt a lot about Canadian art, Canadian towns, Scottish landmarks (!), and also got some food for thought re: what makes an artist.
Yes, the detective storyline is secondary (plus it only appears at the end and is pretty short), but it's not for the first time, and probably not for the last.
I read this series for its characters, and I enjoyed meeting them again and "hearing" their banter. Also I liked how Clara changed - in Still-Life she's this unwanted artist and somewhat of an outcast who relies on her much more talented (at least as it looked at that time) husband in basically anything. Here she's a flashed-out master who has a strong will, a line of admirers and better understanding of life.
All in all, if you're ready for the murder mysteries to take a back seat and enjoy art, you'll like this one.
