Nothing Like the Movies
by Lynn Painter
2.5 stars. I thought Liz was a bit annoying in the first book but chalked it up to being a teen obsessed with rom-coms. In this book she is absolutely annoying af and apparently hates romance but other than just mentioning it a lot I didn’t get the impression she hated it just that she didn’t talk about it like she used to? She acted like a bratty child and I was very happy when Clarke called her out on her bs! I also hated how she knew why she was hesitant to get back with him due to his lack of openness and communication if anything bad happened in their future, but claimed she didn’t know how to tell him? And then still didn’t tell him after in the hospital?? Also, how did Wes not immediately suspect her and Clarke have a fake relationship when him and Liz had had one in the last book? Especially when everyone who knew the two of them thought it was odd they were suddenly together and because Clarke was a terrible actor?
The synopsis made it sound like Wes does a bunch of movie worthy grand gestures and I felt like there was only two? I don’t count the ski-masquerade one but if you do then 3? I think from the synopsis and the cover it was going to involve at least a Say Anything moment? I did like how their date went though, the trunk picnic was cute.
I hated that both didn’t really resolve their past traumas and I really didn’t like Liz in this book. I was excited for this but it felt unnecessary instead of a cute sequel. I did like Clarke and the teammates a lot, they were great side characters.
