Emily Windsnap and the Monster from the Deep by Liz Kessler

5.0

I have to admit, after the way the first book in this series ended - with Emily and her family going to Allpoints Island to live and leaving everything, and everyone, at Brightport behind - I was surprised to see Mandy playing a role in this story. After the treatment that Emily had received at the hands of Mandy, I can't blame her for not wanting to ever see her again. Of course, given those feelings, I really shouldn't be all that surprised that Mandy ends up showing up. But, does she cause more problems for Emily this time? What about Emily's secret? If she finds out, will she tell the world?

All of these questions are certainly important, but they don't really come up until Emily actually knows that Mandy is nearby, which doesn't happen for a bit. And, to be quite honest, she probably never would have known if Emily and Shona hadn't gotten themselves in just a little bit of trouble exploring an area of the island that's supposed to be off-limits to everybody.

Given the portrayal of Mandy in the first book, I really liked the little shorts at the end of each chapter that told a bit of the story from Mandy's point of view. It's really easy to forget that everybody has their own motivations for their actions and that what we think we know about someone isn't always true.

Finally, after reading through two books, I'm pretty sure that my favorite character is Millie. I know she doesn't have a big role in either book, but she has a way with people that just makes you love her. The way she spoke to King Neptune in this book was fabulous and if I'm ever in trouble, I want her on my side. What does she say to King Nepture, you ask. Well, you'll just have to read the book (or listen to the audiobook) and find out. If you're not sure about it, it's worth it. Even if you don't count Millie's comments, the story - especially the way it ends - is definitely worth the read.
