It’s a great feeling when I finish a novella and wish it had been a novel, not because it felt unfinished or rushed, but because I don’t want to be done with it yet. Upright Women Wanted was a bit scary in the way the Handmaid’s Tale is scary—not so removed from our own society as to be totally implausible. I can only hope Gailey sees fit to revisit the librarians somewhere down the road.
