Bloodless
by Douglas Preston, Lincoln Child
Normally when a book says "in their toughest/bizarrest/most X case yet" I'm skeptical.
20 books in and we STILL haven't seen the weirdest case yet? Okay, sure. Well, they were not overselling it.
Normally these books have some extraordinary elements. Science that could be possible, mythology/mutation that's not too bizarre. It usually leaves these books in a universe that "could be if things are slightly more unreal".
This takes that premise and adds 2 or 3 orders of magnitude. Initially I thought this would be "jumping the shark", too unreal. While it does stand out from the rest of the series in that regard, I find liked it and wouldn't mind seeing the series taken in more that direction. After 20 books, why not go a bit further
