On the Come Up by Angie Thomas

5.0

This story was so eye-opening to me. Angie Thomas did a wonderful job tackling some tough issues and offering a tiny slice of what it's like to be a black woman. Everyone needs to read On the Come Up--it will help white people (and POC) sympathize with and learn to fight for black people, and I imagine black people will feel very seen. I am not black, but I found Bri to be such a relatable character, in her struggles with relationships, fight against stereotypes, and strong voice. Thank you, Angie, for writing about these hard but necessary topics. We need more of these books.
