The Test by Sylvain Neuvel

5.0

This book was so good. It’s a novella that’s just the right length. There’s not a word or sentence that’s extraneous. It’s brilliant. It’s also intense and tense so be prepared. The book delves into so many important issues without being in your face or preachy. And it doesn’t try to fix these issues either because there’s no easy fix to racism, immigrant issues, war and stabilization. I mean there is—but tell that to the governments of the world.

Basing the plot on a citizenship test is genius but adding the sci-fi dystopian angle to the test is so distressing and sad. We’ve seen this concept play out in sci-fi before, but the stakes feel higher and the characters even more of an underdog.

The ending is so sad. Just heart-breaking. I think it’s a really hard one that will sit with you. Good intentions and the hell they create come to mind.

Such a good book. Highly recommend it to everyone. But it is a stressful and distressing read so be warned.
