Sad Girls
by Lang Leav
Before I begin, some trigger warnings for the book:
Suicide, self harm, anxiety, drug abuse, violence, sexual abuse. Overall, it’s a pretty dark book.
I am floored. This book was outside of my usual genre of reads, somehow, but it still struck me as familiar. The story gives me the same feeling as a combination of Pretty Little Liars and Gilmore Girls (Jess arc). It’s gripping from the beginning, but about halfway through I just couldn’t stop reading until I finished it.
I really enjoyed each character. I loved that the protagonist starts off on bad footing and isn’t always likable. If everyone is their own protagonist, every protagonist can’t be likable because every person sure isn’t. The way anxiety is dealt with through the different characters really spoke to me.
The scene at the trailer park obliterated me. And I won’t spoil anything specific, but that ending. Wow. I am floored. Unrealistic? Perhaps, but who said all books have to be realistic? It was real enough to draw me in.
