Jude the Obscure by Thomas Hardy
4.0

Briiliantly written, thoroughly depressing. It's Thomas Hardy, after all. I read it for the Oxford connection, but I didn't realise that it's such a violent polemic against marriage. It could be titled Moby Dick 2, or The White Veil. The didacticism sometimes gets the better of the story.
