The History of Tom Jones, a Foundling
by Henry Fielding
3.5/4 out of 5 star read!! I loved the wittiness and the satirical vibes from this book and how wild everything was. The ending almost broke me by how disappointing I thought it’d turn out, but True Love’s Kiss™ came to save the day which, thought cliché, it worked. Not to mention it was written in the 1600s and still has remnants of old english which this book helped me better myself at.
Tom Jones is the story about a man who’s a bastard left on the bed of a squire Allworthy who later raises him as his own. The heroine, as she is described by our unnamed narrator, is known as Sophia Western who is the neighbor and lover of Jones. They are destined to be married, but because of Jones’ birth story, he is often driven off and neglected or laughed at. Of course, the two can’t be married and Jones is banished from his home due to a horrible, very shallow lie that’s told about him. Sophia is set up to marry someone she detests and runs away. Between the ending and beginning is just a wild goose chase between Jones and Sophia that it just becomes unbearable. You end up hoping they HAVE to be together in the end or all of the running would be a waste.
Now, I had the abridged version of the book, so I didn’t go through the “trouble” of reading the 900+ page like it suggested lol. However, the fact that is was abridged did alter my opinion of the book. I would describe it as probably be a lose-lose scenario, though because if it was abridged I’d get more story, but dislike it more. As for this version, the story seemed to only capture the adventurous, captivating moments which was to the point and to my liking.
I don’t know how much was cut out, but I’m sure many more explicit sexual encounters might have occurred and the curses wouldn’t be censored.
That brings me to my next point which is that there is a lot of cursing. I have no problem with it by any means however this book is heavy with slutshaming and disrespect for women that they neglected to censor. So words like slut and whore are spat very freely while ass and damn are censored. There were a few strong women that take charge and are highly respected which I greatly appreciated. For its time, the ideas of women vs. men are quite similar to today’s time.
I loved how even though Tom’s character was a happy, optimistic man, his character as events went on broke down and felt miserable which while sad, gave a good perspective on how life can be trying to even the most heartwarming of people.
Finally, the fact that someone’s opinion of someone else can change on the drop of a dime is ridiculous and every character had this flaw, willing to believe anything said about Jones that can hurt his reputation and almost cost him his love. Anyways, this was really long, but I really wanted to talk about this book. x.
