Interpreter of Maladies by Jhumpa Lahiri
5.0
My second reading of this collection of short stories was even more rewarding than the first. I read this when it was first published in 1999, but couldn't remember the details so I gave it another read. These stories are so well-crafted! When Jhumpa Lahiri published this collection at age 32, she won the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction, the Pen/Hemingway Award for Debut Fiction, and the New Yorker's Debut Book of the Year. But don't read it for the awards it garnered, read it for the moving, complicated human stories she tells. The quality of the writing is obviously rich and sophisticated, and yet somehow grounded and accessible all at the same time.
