Surviving Verdance looks easy compared to what the Isle of Ember has in store.
Immediately upon landing on Ember the crew of the Zephyrus meets the Drakin people (think dragon plus humans) and are immediately imprisoned for the crimes of their country a generation ago. Vivienne has to figure out how to gain the trust of the monarchy, control her newly found power, and protect Ember from its own rising political tension. Not to mention it getting harder and harder to keep her eyes on her former fiancé and away from the ship's commander.
Anderson writes longing almost unlike anyone else. If you are looking for slow burn with barely any spice, absolutely look no further. Isle of Ember has the kind of writing that flows incredibly well and is easy to read and stay invested.
While the Enchanted Isles book have a few side characters that add to the diversity of the books, between the main character and her three love interests I would have appreciated at least one person of color. Unfortunately, I also had a few issues with the plot. The crew is captured almost immediately and the officers (aka the main characters) are allowed to live as guests but the officers don't seem that concerned that their captain and crew are being held as ransom. If it were me I would be panicking trying to figure out how to free everyone. There were a few other minor issues I had, but I'll leave them out since they're spoilers. No matter the issues I had with this book, it was still an extremely fun read.
Thank you Alycia E. Anderson for the advanced copy.
