The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins
5.0

Does this really need explaining? I mean, The Hunger Games has literally defined the dystopian genre, and for a reason - it’s amazing, and everyone knows it.

This is the most “simple” book in the series. It doesn’t focus as much on the world-building and social commentary as later books. Instead we read more about what living in District 12 and participating in the Games is like for a “normal” Panem citizen. Only at the end do we get to the start of something bigger.

Even still, Katniss is the perfect unreliable narrator (constantly distrusting everyone around her, questioning everyone’s motives and seeing every kindness as a transaction) and a likeable main-character - smart, resourceful, independent, strong, sarcastic and a survivor at heart.

It’s a timeless classic, and I fear every year it becomes more relevant.
