Born of Blood and Ash
by Jennifer L. Armentrout
"The line between love and obsession has never been wider."
Whewww, baby. That was... A LOT!!! I didn't want to finish this book!
This was everything I needed this last book to be. FULL of information and it all tied together so perfectly!! I lost count of how many times I said "oh shit!" when putting together the puzzle pieces from the FBAA series! It was actually mind-blowing how much information was packed into this book, because it never felt overwhelming. The ending to this book set up the final two books for FBAA so well. There were obviously things that we need to wait for, that deal with Poppy and Cas, so I'm excited to continue on with their story, but also, I'm so sad to be saying goodbye to Sera and Nyktos.
This was such an emotional read. SO much trauma and growth throughout the entire book/series.
I love the character development that Nyktos goes through. In the first book when we get to know him, he was always reserved. He only showed his true self around Sera, and only ever showed her love and affection. By this last book, we see a whole new Nyktos, and I thought I couldn't be more in love with him, but seeing him learn to trust again, and grow into allowing himself happiness was truly so beautiful!!!! He deserves it!
Sera's story in this book was a lot. There was a lot of heaviness that surrounded her character, and I'm glad we got to see her work through her trauma, instead of it being pushed aside. My heart broke for her. She was in constant denial about what happened to her with Kolis. Being able to accept, and work through trauma, takes a long time for some people. There isn't a timeframe for any amount of abuse you go through, and JLA did an amazing job, in my opinion, with showing us how long healing can take. Also, the importance of the conversation about how other's may have been in worse situations, doesn't mean you're not allowed to feel how you feel. I'm glad Sera was able to find peace!!
"You are who I fell in love with, Sera. Every part of you. Not just the easy stuff but the complicated, messy aspects, and I love each part of you equally. You will always be what I cherish most...Nothing will ever change that."
A lot has already been said about Nyktos and Sera's love for each other, but, I can't get enough. It's literally the type of love that gives you butterflies while you're reading. I can never get enough of them!!! The way that they're so patient with each other and communicate so well... UGH! I'm in love with BOTH of them.
Also, in love with the relationship Sera has with the draken!!!!! Reaver-Butt and Jadis.. are you joking?! Cuteness overload every time there was a scene with them. Especially, the one where they were trying to cheer her up! I love the way we got to see the progression of Sera and Nyktos' relationship with Nektas, too. I love Nektas!
The battle scenes were literally so crazy and the descriptions were vivid! I think this was one of my favorite battle scenes, honestly. The discussions about war and death were quite interesting, as well. I liked that the characters are morally aware, and acknowledge that their actions have consequences!
"The edges of my vision turned silver and gold, snapping my head back. 'I am done with this!' A scream of rage erupted from deep within me, releasing the Primal essence—unleashing my will as I summoned the fallen gods and dragons. 'All of this.' "
Like I said, I didn't want this book to end. I'm so sad to see these characters go. I hope we get to see them in FBAA. I'm totally not ready for what's to come in the next series, but, here we go.. September can't come fast enough.
"...It was all the same. Some great, some terrible, and it had driven realms to the brink of what was to come. It was the most selfish and altruistic thing of all the realms. More powerful than the ancients. The only thing that could snap the threads of fate. It was the only hope the realms had now... Love."
