This is the story of a community that was incredibly tight-knit. Like many good bad ideas, it started at the local bar where everyone was lamenting the treatment that soldiers in Vietnam were getting upon their return. It was suggested that someone should take the local boys a beer to let them know they were loved and missed. The idea gain speed until it seemed like the only option left. The author a merchant marine had the ability to go in country and the bad sense of timing to arrive just before the Tet offensive. I appreciated the update at the end.
