This is why fairy tales are dangerous: their words sneak into your veins and travel into the chambers of your heart, where they whisper of you exceptionalism—But we are not exceptional.

From the moment I knew of this novel, I was certain I was going to love it. A reminder to trust your gut, it is rarely ever wrong.

Chokshi has a fascinating way of placing words together, of writing something so ugly in the most beautiful way. She didn't need to prove she could write a gothic adult novel that would grip the reader by the throat, and yet she took her time to do so and did it exceptionally.

I want more adult novels by Chokshi until she doesn't want to give them to us anymore, I will read and devour them all. Without guilt or shame.

Don't take my word for it as I know nothing about anything, but I can see this novel being considered a 'classic' in the future. One where the literature snobs will turn their noses up to those who haven't read it, because how dare you call yourself a fan of literature without having consumed The Last Tale of the Flower Bride?!

Beautiful, stunning, painful, angering, gripping, et cetera. They all apply.

Oaths are brittle things, not unlike an egg.— there is one thing they all share: they must be broken for there to be a story. Only a shattered promise yields a rich, glittering yolk of tale.
