Entirely too confusing. The language, the writing, the jumping back and forth on the timeline- it all adds to the confusion. I was rereading sections and entire chapters (chapters are oddly short). I don’t understand why it was rated well by various outlets.
It does do a lot of introspection as the main character is a white woman with both more and less rights than an African American male in early England, but it’s nothing you don’t already know after being a minority.
