Sweet Nightmare
by Tracy Wolff
medium-paced
I won an eBook of Sweet Nightmare from the publisher. I wasn’t too sure what this book was about because I hadn’t read the synopsis.
I enjoyed the first parts of the book, I’m a sucker for a school setting and to have a “reform school for the paranormal” yes sold. I just feel like overall the plot wasn’t thought out well enough for me and there were a lot of random things added that did nothing for the story. The school wasn’t really explained well, I don’t really know that criteria for the students to end up there. We just know their powers are “shut off” when they are admitted. We are introduced to a bunch of characters/ monsters/ students but none of their powers or their actual creature selves are explained. And the author basically kills of half of the characters for no reason. Our main character is being punished and we have no idea why, besides it seems like her mother who also is the headmaster appears to hate her. We later learn maybe why but it also isn’t explained at all. And then there’s her friends the lovers to enemies to lovers ex boyfriend who they reunite in this story, but it’s briefly touched on but again not really. And then they all of a sudden become mated at the end, agin the mating bond not explained at all just thrown in there and then not talked about again. Clementine also can see ghosts but hasn’t told anyone at all, so again something else just thrown in with no explanation, and then we learn something at the end that maybe has to do with it but doesn't actually explain if it does or not. There was just so much introduced and never hashed out to the reader that it made this read kind of a mess.
I don’t personally think that I would read more from this author or recommend her work based off of this book. And I’m not going to grab book two and hope that everything gets explained.
