Manga Classics: Jane Eyre
by Crystal S. Chan, Charlotte Brontë
I honestly didn't believe I'd like Jane Eyre.
I highly dislike Austen's works so I thought Jane Eyre would fall in the same category. (Now that I think about it, I disliked Austen years ago. Maybe now my view might change...) Anyway.
Jane turned out to be a lovely character ! I immediately fell for her, her qualities, her flaws, her passion. I did sometimes thought her a bit naive but then I thought "Come on, she's in love ! Of course she'll be a bit naive !!!"
My favorite choices of Jane are :when she realizes she may have been too harsh to her aunt and decided to visit her despite the way she was treated back when she was a child, her refusal to marry Mr Rochester when she finds out he's already married, her choice to share her money with her cousins, her refusal to marry St John !!! That felt GOOD.
I didn't give it 5 stars because of a few things that bugged me. Jane is of course the focus of the novel. But I felt like she was the sole focus. I mean, characters wise, I didn't get attached to anyone else because I felt like they weren't developped enough. Even Mr Rochester and St John. I actually dislike both of them haha but also feel like I didn't get enough material to judge them.
Now plot wise, I found the story quite exciting except forthe moment right after Jane found out the truth about Mr Rochester's marriage. I don't know why but it took me weeks to get past this...
To conclude, it's a classic that I found much easier to read than I thought with a very interesting character and a plot which keeps us in suspense !
