He's Just Not That Into You: The No-Excuses Truth to Understanding Guys by Greg Behrendt, Liz Tuccillo

2.0

It’s not that the overall message of this book was awful - it’s just that it’s so grounded in sexism and creepiness that I couldn’t get on board.

The argument that men love to chase women and women exist to be chased is outdated and sexist and the assertion that it’s based on some biological impulse has been thoroughly challenged my modern science (is start with Testosterone Rex for reading) Urgh. The idea that if this was the case, that women should just role over and accept things because that’s what the poor men like is sad. Why do men get to shape the ‘rules of engagement’ ...

The book was also beyond heteronormative, you’d think only straight people exist.

The chapter on sex was a perfect example of rape culture. The idea that all men want sex all the time and if they don’t they don’t like you is awful. It’s not true and this attitude has been used to delegitimatise sexual abuse.

So overall a potentially good message ruined by some pretty loathsome messages
