Red Queen by Victoria Aveyard

5.0

I don’t remember the last time I was this invested in a book, I forgot how fun dystopian books can get. The thrill of having your favorite characters fighting against all the odds to save their burning world and 'Red Queen' was satisfactory in that aspect, it leaves you high and dry, wondering how long till it all blows up right on their face. Majority of the characters were snakes but I absolutely adored the Calore boys and Mare is impressive in her way of approaching things with a strong head. A pretty silver crusted crown dripping crimson blood, honestly, the cover is the plot. I'm completely unstable after taking the blow of the ending, whoever knew I'd get in conflict with another spectacular villain with questionable intentions.

A nation divided by blood.
Red and Silver.

The Silvers each own a special ability, they are treated like Gods with every luxury and power under their possession. Whereas the Reds are left to rot on the streets. It is required of the Reds to have a stable job to be useful to the society before coming of age, the ones who doesn’t, are sent to the front line of the war zone, serving in the military.

Having three brothers who were dealt with the same fate, 17 years old Mare Barrow knew long before what's to come, unlike her hardworking sister, she had no luck in job market; instead stealing and pick pocketing around the village. When her childhood friend unexpectedly loses his job and is to be shipped off to the borders, she makes a deal with a mysterious woman to get them both to somewhere safe. To give the woman the price she demanded for her friend's safety, Mare attemps to rob a man in the bar. After a night of desperate confession, she is surprised to be offered a job as a palace servant and more so when she recognises crown prince Cal as the man from the bar.

On the day of Queenstrail, a tradition for the future king to choose his bride, Mare discovers a deadly power of her own. A Red, a commoner with that kind of power, a thing never happened before, shocks everyone to silence. The Silver royals know this kind of thing won't settle well, so to cover it up, they offer the wellbeing of her family in exchange of her pretending to be someone else.

Lost daughter of a Silver lord and would be wife of the youngest prince Maven Calore.

She knows the royals can get rid of her as easily but having her family on the line, Mare must do as they say even gamble with a court full of power hungry hounds, who would rip her apart if they knew who she is. She finds herself trying to learn more of her power and secretly supporting a rebel organisation who are promising a future for the Reds.
