The Blossom and the Firefly
by Sherri L. Smith
I am so glad I stumbled across this book at the library! A beautifully written story told from two alternating perspectives set in southern Japan during WWII. Hana is a young school girl whose class has been assigned to war work assisting the young pilots before their flights and sending them off on their missions. Toro is a young pilot who finds himself deployed to town where Hana lives.
I was particularly taken by this book as it is a perspective we don't often encounter here (at least not that I have discovered) of what the war experience was for the young people caught up in it in Japan. There were several times I had to stop to savour the beauty of what was written.
