I struggled through this book. The writing style is irritating,  especially for the first few chapters, until you get used to it. There is no story, no plot. The chapters aren't that interesting.  I like books, but the long lists of references,  many of which I hadn't read, just made we feel inadequate.
This book recently won the Europees Literatuur prize, for the best translated novel. Surely they could have found something better? Not even a brilliant translation could redeem this book.
