The Long Goodbye by Raymond Chandler
3.0
It’s hard to rate these books because of the racism, homophobia, and misogyny. I still enjoy Chandler’s writing, but the bad parts are ingrained in it.
Aside from that, the problem with this book is that two characters, Lennox andWade, are almost the same guy: alcoholic, depressed, unpredictable men. The women are all sort of interchangeable too. Marlowe’s nobility is over the top as well, refusing money left and right despite having actually earned it.
I first read these books 40 or 50 years ago and loved them. This nostalgic revisit has taken a lot of the shine off.
