The Prettiest Star by Carter Sickels

5.0

Um. Wow. I had read beforehand that this book was widely anticipated and I can see why.

"The Prettiest Star" is the story of a twenty-something man named Brian who returns to his home in small town Ohio. He moves after losing many friends to AIDS and after being diagnosed himself.

This is a beautiful story told from Brian's, his mother Sharon's, and his sister Jess's POV. This combination of perspectives is a dream because you get great insight as to how this disease affected everyone in a person's life, not just the diagnosed.

I especially liked the vibe of this book. It painted a descriptive picture of a small American town. I felt the slow-paced, town atmosphere and the people who lived there. I was also particularly impressed with the way Sickles described the smell of each character.

Overall, this was a short and beautiful read. Be warned, it may cause you to leak from your eyes.
