Twelve Years a Slave
by Solomon Northup
In one word: moving.
This book made me feel outraged and ashamed... but there were uplifting moments too, and I could feel Solomon’s strength through his words—he tells his story brilliantly, from beginning to end.
I watched the movie years ago but hadn’t read the book. If you haven’t read this one yet and are on a quest to educate yourself about Black American history, this is a good place to start.
