The Sun Also Rises
by Ernest Hemingway
So subtle that at times one might start to wonder why this slice of some very dissipated lives is a novel, so subtle that if one misses the brief, startling glimpses of what's beneath the surface it begins to seem tedious, the novel picks and teases and then slays with its final line--the coup de grace.
