I've enjoyed Hill's other two books ("Heart-Shaped Box" and "Horns") so went into NOS4A2 with high hopes, and I wasn't disappointed. The writing is some of the best he's ever done, and the story is clever and unique. The tale follows Victoria "Vic" McQueen and her lifelong battle with herself to accept and believe in her magical ability to cross an imaginary bridge to find anything that's been lost. As the story unfolds and McQueen grows up she's eventually brought into a confrontation with Charlie Manx, a man who also possesses magic, an ability to take children to "Christmasland" in his 1938 Rolls-Royce Wraith, where he drains them of their humanity to power his own life. The tale is epic, and to say more would spoil the story. Suffice it to say that about the only thing I didn't like about this book was the gimmicky title. (A nod to the Wraith's license plate.) Recommended.
