Beyond the Point
by Claire Gibson
I have gone back and forth between giving this book 3.5 or 4 stars. The last couple chapters were probably the best part of the book and I think the author did a great job of describing what faith looks like even in the midst of extreme darkness. Well done there. I picked up the book because I’d heard great reviews but honestly didn’t know what it was about. I am not a naturally patriotic or military minded person so I went into this with an open mind and did enjoy learning about life in the army and at West Point. What I didn’t like about the book was the pacing and disorganization. I felt like the author was CONSTANTLY leaving us on cliffhangers at the end of each chapter but would only sometimes explain what had just happened. It didn’t feel productive to the story. They way “flashbacks” were written wasn’t super helpful and I often felt like I was missing something. That was the frustrating and annoying part of this book and I often just wanted it to be over. Still undecided on my rating. It is a good story but the writing itself could definitely be tightened up.
