I want to add the caveat at the beginning of this explanation for anyone reading: I don’t think GFM is a bad person and I think she’s a phenomenal writer. This book is just not for me, and I have the respect for myself and the author to put it down and walk away.
Reading this and being exposed to body horror, queer disgust, and the holocaust/queer nazis was getting to me. I opened the book this morning and told myself if by the end of this chapter, I wasn’t gripped and excited to finish the book, I was gonna out it down.
Then on that same page I read the phrase: “It felt as though someone had put a curling iron up her privares. She began to cry.”
I, too, began to cry. And then I put the book down.
More power to GFM though, that’s how I’m gonna describe my UTIs from now on
