The Song of Achilles
by Madeline Miller
Lyrical and compulsive, Miller mines the Iliad to bring a story of devotion and destiny. Not as mature or affecting as Miller's later Circe in my opinion, but nevertheless composed with great care and sensitivity. I will have to revisit Pat Barker's The Silence of the Girls to compare their treatments, especially of Briseis. A very readable version of one of the West's great narratives.
The only thing that gave me pause was the title. It looks more like a leftover working title than reflective of the heart of the story. Curious.
