I love this style of story and T Kingfisher. I loved Nettle and Bone, Thornhedge, and Bryony and Roses. This one fell a little short for me. I love the story of the goose girl, and I feel I may have set my hopes a little too high. I found myself mentally wandering several times as the prose became a little meandering and there were some scenes that felt unnecessary. The premise is interesting, but I feel like the magic system was a little over-explained. The beautiful thing about fairy tales is that we already know all the rules. I can put 2 and 2 together to make 4 without needing it all laid out and summed up. That being said, I feel the emotions and trauma of the main characters translated so well. Anyone who grew up with a narcissistic parent will feel Cordelia's pain down to their bones. Additonally, the allusions to the original tale gave me little sparks of joy. This one falls closer in line with the Seventh Bride to me, but the Seventh Bride was a little on the otherside of the explanation line, where things were wild and almost nothing was explained. This one, things made sense, but had to be explained anyway, which pulled me out of it a bit. 7.8/10
