Witches Steeped in Gold by Ciannon Smart
1.0

DNF at page 178.

I really wanted to give this one a chance; the cover looked gorgeous, the Jamaican-inspired setting caught my eye, and I thought that I might find something good amidst all the mediocre-to-bad reviews it was getting.

Alas...I didn't really have the patience to read any more of "Witches Steeped in Gold" after I got about a third of the way through. The worldbuilding had potential, but was surface-level at best; I never got a sense of how the magic system worked. At all. In addition, even though Iraya's and Jazmyne's chapters were differentiated, their voices were almost indistinguishable from each other. And to top it all off, I felt like in the almost 200 pages I read, very little seemed to happen. I got a very nebulous sense of what was happening, and the way that the action was spread out made it hard to remember how and why the characters had gotten to the points in the journey they were at.

All that made me decide to give up on this one. Sorry.
