Personal Memoirs
by Ulysses S. Grant
My lord, this was a behemoth. Just north (ha ha) of 700 pages and it didn't even cover the entire life of Ulysses S. Grant. What we're given is a very brief description of his formative years and then a jump straight into his service during the Mexican American War of the 1840s, his retirement from the military, his failed attempt at a "normal" life, and his second coming as a leader in the U.S. Civil War.
Did you happen to notice something rather large missing from this life story? Like, say, two terms as the President of this nation? Yeah, me too. Except I didn't know that before starting to read this and that's really what I wanted to know more about.
The rest of this story is just so minutely detailed as to be oppressively boring. I doubt actual military after-action reports have this much information.
But if I ever need a witness on my side during a jury trial, I want it to be U.S. Grant. I wish I knew if he just kept really damn good notes or had an eidetic memory.
