Memorial by Bryan Washington

2.0

Okay, before I get into it, I generally think 2 stars means I liked it but wouldn’t personally recommend spending more time on it.

I was perhaps too excited to read Memorial. Diverse characters representing the LGBTQIA+ community? Here for it.

However, the dialogue left me wanting and I just don’t think it will be a book I even remember reading. Which is my new favorite way of deciding how much I liked the book, I guess.

What I liked:
- I love slow burn books where there isn’t a lot of drama, just people living realistic and monotonous lives. This was that.
- A portrayal of how muddied family relationships can get and how things left unsaid can negatively impact connection.
-The characters accept their disconnect (?? I don’t know if this is good, because they stayed in a relationship much longer than they should have and the whole book was dragging because of said disconnect being present the entire time.)

What I didn’t like:
-Their love story didn’t have me rooting for them. When it ended, I didn’t feel anything. At all.
-The characters were underwhelming. Realistic? Yes. But you can write realistic characters with exuberance for me to want to know more about them.
