Daily Rituals: How Artists Work by Mason Currey

5.0

So, what do we discover about the work habits of artists?

We discover quite a lot.

Some were workaholics, some were lazy. Some woke far too early, and some slept in until mid afternoon. Some worked at night, some during the day. Some had children, or were married, or had a plethora of social obligations, while some were alone and avoided any human contact as far as possible. Some were euphorically happy, some self-medicated with narcotics or alcohol or both. At least one committed suicide.

But all were productive.

If there is any takeaway from this book, it's this: the key to productivity and success is to understand yourself. If you can see parts of yourself in each of these artists, if seeing them, you see your own habits and idiosyncrasies reflected back at you, this book has done it's work.
