For 4 years in the mid 1980s I lived near St. Marks, so for me, this was a fascinating account of the legendary street and surrounding neighborhood's history, from its inception to contemporary times. Written with loving nostalgia for where she grew up, Calhoun also tracks the neighborhood's colorful and edgy "golden years" and subsequent gentrification with sharp cultural and historical detail.
