There was a detachment to the writing that left the entire story- the history the book is set in and the affair between an older, married, Protestant man and a young Catholic woman- feeling bland and dispassionate. The affair made no sense to me apart from it being another situation of an older man in a position of power taking advantage of a young woman--although I got no sense that this was what the author was trying to do with the love story. The historical setting doesn't get the attention it deserves, but/and the affair is unremarkable without the setting.
