The Farthest Shore by Ursula K. Le Guin
3.0

I felt that this was a confused book. I didn't end the story feeling anything different for Ged or for Arren. Meeting dragons from legend and crossing the barrier between life and death should have been huge events. But they felt a bit flat.

The major lesson in the book for Arren, who repeatedly doubted Ged, his power and magic in general, should have been the discovery of the importance of the Balance and what can happen when it is violated so severely. This would be a massive thing for a future king to take away and understand. But we weren't left with that impression, which feels like a waste.

I did really enjoy seeing more of the world, and I did enjoy the depiction of all of the people who were affected by Cob's actions - showing what life is like when you lose hope and direction in life. Drugs, drink, petty crime, bickering and always people looking to take advantage.
