Daughter of Sparta by Claire M. Andrews

4.0

There are times I wish I was 17 again. And it's kinda strange for me to wish something like that, because my teenager years weren't happy years. However, I would like to be 17 again to read these books at an age where they really would have made a difference, where they would have had way more impact than they have now. I'm 33, but I love that the world is changing and that books like this are being written. I'd say. Keep them coming!

This books reads like the most amazing female focussed Greek Mythology fanfiction ever. As a kid I devoured all those stories and Daphne, the heroine in this story, gets to actually live them. It means that the official timelines are blurred, that details get changed, that some myths will never happen, but who cares! This is the kind of story every girl falling in love with Greek Mythology wants! Where myths and Gods and a fierce girl all come together.

Despite the fact that the book inserts a female character from Sparta into loads of normally male dominated tales, it's not just some playing around. The author clearly created a very solid base for her story, thought about her magic system and how it worked and mixing all the tales feels very natural and fitting. There are quite a few reveals in the end putting pieces of the puzzle into place and I can't wait to see how the story continues in the next book!

Even more because I really enjoyed reading about Daphne. I'm not always a fan of the "fierce girls with weapons"-trope, but in this case it's so well done. Daphne is so much more than a fierce warrior girl. She has a layered and complex personality, she learns and grows throughout the story and despite her being fierce she has mental and physical breakdowns. She is crying at times. She is angry. She does show her emotions. She's fierce, but she's most of all beautifully human.

And I if I had gotten this book when I was 17 and in the midst of my Greek Mythology obsession, I would have talked about this books for at least 3 months!
